State Bowl Action:
In Fridays action the first game featured the Bishop Kinghts (La Jolla, CA) vs Brookside Christian Knights (Stockton, CA). In an ongoing rain that started early Friday morning this game was decided rather early. Bishop would jump out to and early lead and never look back. There was a scare in the third when Brookside would close to within 6 points amking the score 20-14.
This night would belong to Alec Fisher and the Knights running off 20 more unanswered points to end the game 40 -14. Fisher would run for 167 yards and score 4 touchdowns also catching a fifth. Bishop finishes their season 14-0 and Brookside 12-1.
Corona Centennial falls to Palo Alto:
In the Division I Title game between the Corona Centennial Huskies and the Palo Alto Vikings there was a twist that no one expected. The Huskies were the favorite and were expected to make easy of this. The Vikings didn’t get that memo and outplayed and out hustled the Huskies in a low scoring smash mouth football game. Clearly the Palo Alto squad was stronger than Centennial, with the exception of Centennial’s Quarterback, Michael Eubank.
It would take Palo Alto one bad snap and two passes in the first half, to win the State title. Christopher Bono, son of the NFL’s Steve Bono would complete the night on 13 of 23 passing for 213 yards, eluding Huskies defenders all night. Centennial’s Michael Eubank would have a decent outing throwing 10 of 20 for 111 yards and rushing 16 times for 164 yards and one touchdown. He was unable to gain short yardage at crucial times like in the fourth quarter when a two point conversion would have tied the game.
Palo Alto would score all their points in the first half but it would end up being enough. First a safety to start, on a bad snap to Eubanks and then Bono would connect on passes of 33 and 80 yards. The game would end on a partial block of a 42 yard Centennial field goal attempt by Maurice Williams, as the clock would tick off and end Centennial’s hopes of a great comeback.
Palo Alto just played literally mistake free football, having no turnovers and 30 yards in penalties, on the other hand Centennial would be penalized 11 times for 112 yards one of which wiped out a touchdown that would have put the game close in the third quarter.
Palo Alto ends the season 14-0 and Corona Centennial end the season 14-1
Congratulations Huskies on a great season and a tough loss

The Sweet

Gardena Serra fails to repeat as the State Champion, falls to Folsom 48-20
The story told around town is that the rain was falling, or the field was too muddy, or we would have won if it wasn’t raining. In the game that I saw, the Serra Cavaliers were out coached by the Folsom Bulldogs, in similar fashion to last years game between Crenshaw and Concord De LaSalle.
Football is a game that has always been played in any weather so you can never blame the weather, when the weather changes, the game plan must change. Serra's plan was to use their speed with George farmer and Marquise Lee to air out the football and let them run and catch all day. Folsom's plan was to use one down lineman and disrupt Serra's blocking assignments. Folsom also did what teams do in the rain, put on your long cleats and run the ball. Serra proved themselves to be one dimensional, and Folsom caught it.
Serra actually looked as if they were going to make a grand comeback when the halftime score was 21-20 and they were down by one. Needless to say Folsom and the rain had other ideas, causing the Cavs to stumble and crumble in the end. For this reason the newest attack on the CIF Southern Section started to buzz right after the game ended, with people talking about alternate sites to accommodate weather conditions. We must remember that, at the end of the day folks,
THIS IS FOOTBALL AND IT IS TO BE PLAYED IN ANY WEATHER CONDITION.
Maybe instead of a different field you may need a different COACH....
See ya next year..
